Where can you go skiing in Slovakia?
Winter sports are very popular in Slovakia. Every year, the well-equipped ski centres attract not only locals but also foreign visitors. There are 36 modern ski centres in the mountains, offering wonderful skiing conditions for everyone. The High Tatras are the most important winter sports destination in Slovakia. The mountains cover at least two thirds of Slovakia, guaranteeing snow-white winters. It also has a large number of small to medium-sized ski resorts suitable for all levels of skiers. South of the High Tatras are the hotspots of the Starý Smokovec, Tatranská Lomnica and Štrbské Pleso ski centres, which stretch along the 30 km long valley.The Low Tatras mountains lie on the other side of the High Tatras and are also part of the Carpathians. The ski resort in Demänovská Valley is a particularly interesting place for skiers. The valley, which is also known for its ice caves and is 15 km long, is one of the most important tourist centres north of the Low Tatras. Here you will also find the Jasná winter sports area – in the middle of the Low Tatras. At the end of the 19th century, the ski resort with 45 km of slopes developed into one of the largest and most popular ski resorts in the country.
The ski resort stretches across both sides of Mount Chopok and is well equipped in terms of slope quality and modernity. From December to April, you can enjoy perfectly groomed ski slopes and challenging cross-country trails at an altitude of 950 m to 2,024 m. In addition, there are ideal conditions for snowboarders in the snow park with halfpipes, rails and jumps. For freeride enthusiasts, there are even some off-piste areas with deep snow runs. The ski resort is also often used for international competitions.
