In the Harz Mountains, lovers of Nordic winter sports can enjoy a cross-country skiing paradise with over 500 kilometres of trails. The perfectly groomed trails combine healthy endurance training with relaxing enjoyment of the landscape. There is everything from circular trails to connecting trails and destination trails of varying degrees of difficulty. Around 50 kilometres of easy and difficult trails are available around the towns of Schierke and Thale. Cross-country skiers can expect a variety of trails in an impressive winter landscape around the Brocken at altitudes between 600 and 1,000 metres. As most of the trails run through the beautiful Harz National Park and thus through a nature reserve, cross-country skiers should respect the local flora and fauna and not stray outside the machine-groomed trails and hiking paths.
