Just a few kilometres east of the South Tyrolean capital of Bolzano, Cornedo extends into the Val d'Ega. The municipality of Karneid consists of several small villages, including Kardaun in the Bolzano valley basin, where the municipal seat and town hall are located. The municipality is named after Karneid Castle, which towers over the villages on a steep rocky hill. Karneid is embedded in a very attractive landscape in the southern Dolomites, so that the fraction of Gummer extends into the Rosengarten-Latemar holiday region. From Kardaun or Karneid you can reach the city of Bolzano/Bozen in just a few minutes by car, but you can also quickly reach some wonderful ski areas. Due to its location, Karneid has a Mediterranean climate that allows for plenty of sunshine and the best snow conditions. Skiing in the Latemar-Obereggen ski centre, excursions to the observatory, winter hiking or tobogganing make a skiing holiday in Karneid a varied experience.
